Melbourne's poor performance in conceding 10 goals in a row to end their previous match and Hawthorn's strong performance against the better fancied Carlton had given some hope that the Mayblooms might spring an upset against the Demons, but after a tight first half the home side ran away with a comfortable victory.

It was not an attractive game as the two sides scrapped throughout the day, but the victory lifted the Reds' record to 2-2 for the season - having had 18 different goalkickers for the 48 goals in their first four games. They took control in the opening term, leading by 25 points at the break. Forward pocket Glass had a hand in his side's first three goals.

Hawthorn got within five points in the second quarter, before Melbourne steadied to lead by 11. There was little between the sides at the start of the third term, before two late La Fontaine goals

A tough game descended into brutality in the last quarter, with each side having a man stretchered off. Gordon Ogden had such 'cerebral irritation' that he had to go to hospital. Both sides ended the game with 17 men.

Bestwere Glass, Meehl and Ogden.19th man McNamara replaced Ball (cut head) in the third quarter.

Sid Meehl and Harry Long were both reported for failing to return to their mark. Both were found not guilty. Long was also booked for elbowing and striking, and received a four match ban on the striking charge. Deague and Ball replaced Lewis (flu) and Reiffel (back injury at work) in the selected side.
