Biggest win in Round 23
With a win vital to their chance of finishing in the top four, the Demons went to the Gabba and repeated their huge win over the Lions from earlier in the year. The game was won in a blistering first half, with the 66 point lead at the break their biggest in any game since playing the Lions in Round 18, 1998. During the first quarter, Jake Lever kicked his first goal for the club since joining, ending one of the longest streaks without a goal in the club's history.
The Lions mounted a slight comeback at the start of the second half, before going into the final change 70 points behind. The home side narrowly won a last quarter overshadowed by a cruel sledge towards a family member of Harrison Petty by Brisbane captain Dayne Zorko. Zorko later apologised for the remark.
Melbourne's winning margin left them a game and roughly as far in front of Sydney, who were expected to beat St Kilda two days later. The Swans won, but not by enough to finish second, leaving the final between the sides to be played at the MCG.
Best were Oliver, Brayshaw and Pickett. James Jordon replaced Luke Jackson (knee) in the last quarter.
