The Demons' third game of the season to be decided by a point was the second time they had come out on the wrong side of the ledger. They went into the match as the overwhelming underdogs against the finals challenging but injury hit Saints and the match played out as expected for the first three quarters.
Faced with a 26 point deficit at three-quarter time the Demons took 15 minutes to get into gear in the last quarter. They fell a solitary point short of the upset victory.
Best were Alves, Clennett and Wells. Wells had beaten future teammate Allan Davis handily until he was collected with a bump which slowed him down. McKenzie (bruised shoulder) was replaced by Yeo, and Davis (eye) by Walker, both in the last quarter. Alves injured his ankle.
