After a rampant first quarter the Demons were six goals in front and things were looking grim for Richmond. The Tigers were only 10th on percentage and it seemed that Melbourne was about to inflict another massive victory over their MCG co-tenants.
The inexperienced Tigers narrowed the gap with a six goal to four third quarter, but by the early minutes of the third term they were 37 points behind again. The margin was cut to three goals at the last break, but with the rain falling it seemed Melbourne would be able to hold on. Richmond, though, had other ideas and booted seven goals to one to record a comfortable victory.
Their third straight loss saw the Demons still two games inside the five, but falling away from the double chance rapidly.
Brian Wilson was carried off with concussion after being knocked out late in the first quarter.
Best were Lovett, Stretch and O'Dwyer.
