Biggest win against ((Brisbane Bears)n)
Melbourne's minuscule chances of playing finals required to them to keep winning. Under normal circumstances, the 14th placed Bears wouldn't have been a concern but earlier in the season the Demons collapsed against a Sydney side that hadn't won a game in nearly a year. They also lost to Brisbane in Round 3 after leading by six goals in the third quarter, and the Bears had just snapped a seven game losing streak. This time there were no surprises, registering their biggest win against the Bears, who hadn't won at the MCG since 1988.
Nerves were settled with a 26 point lead at quarter time, and the margin was out to 84 at the last change before they eased off and only added five more points by the final siren.
The Demons went into their bye knowing that other results meant even winning their last three might not be enough to make the top six.
Best were Jim Stynes, Andy Lovell and Stephen Tingay. Jim Stynes was reported for wrestling but found not guilty.
