On a soaking wet day where all the VFL games produced low scores, the Demons needed a win to get back on after losing their spot in the finals race to Geelong. After having stuck their noses in the five for a week - or two if you count the split round as a fortnight - they were back out to sixth but still held a superior percentage over their competitors.
Apart from the mud heap at Moorabbin suburban grounds had held up well against the rain in previous years, but when the forecast predicted howling rain on the Saturday players and fans alike braced themselves for an old fashioned horrible day at the footy.
The only man who didn't get the message about the conditions was Carlton's Jim Buckley, and he was well on his way to 26 kicks for the day at half time when the Demons had been restricted to just 0.3. Carlton were only four goals in front themselves but given the conditions it was an insurmountable gap.
Just when the whispers started to go around about a goalless match for the first time in many years Rodney Wright, the Demons' best by default, kicked their opener five minutes into the third term. That they only lost by 26 despite kicking just two more for the day showed how awful the conditions were. Greg Healy and Jarrott were also amongst the best.
Gerard Healy suffered a thigh injury and Danny Hughes an ankle injury.
Despite the result Geelong did Melbourne a favour by losing to Collingwood and stayed just four points in front. Sydney and Footscray also lost but Richmond won to vault themselves into contention for the last spot in the five.
