Having been thrashed by one half of the top two a week earlier Melbourne had the misfortune to run into the other one seven days later and despite a surprise first quarter lead the result was eventually the same.

On a slippery, heavy ground the first term was strewn with mistakes. The tough going helped Melbourne to stay with their far more fancied opponents, but as the ground improved in condition so did the home side.

Despite stout defending from Melbourne's backmen, seven second quarter goals to the Maroons ended the contest and they eased to a simple victory from there. After a hard fought third quarter word came through from the Richmond/St Kilda game that a big win would benefit Fitzroy so they didn't let up in the last quarter and booted four goals to to nil.

Merrick kicked six to take his total for the season against the Reds to 15.

Lilley, Streeter and Odgers were Melbourne's best.
