Equal lowest score at Kardinia Park
Melbourne put on their annual disappointing trip to Geelong, with the only highlight of the day being Shaun Smith keeping Gary Ablett goalless. Smith's performance went some way to reducing the margin half of what they'd suffered at the hands of the Cats in Round 1.
On a heavy ground, any chance of a high-quality game was ruined by the poor Kardinia Park turf. After leading by a goal at quarter time Geelong gradually pulled away, while Melbourne put themselves out of the contest by kicking just one goal in the middle two quarters. Jeff Farmer was exciting early, kicking two first quarter goals, but after he was stopped by Michael Mansfield there were no other attacking options left for Neale Balme.
The coach said "We tried hard but in the end we just didn't play well enough. We have not got our best mob in so we were probably going to struggle a litte bit."
Best were Smith, Tingay and Obst.
