Despite being just a game out of the five the Demons started underdogs at Princes Park, and by the time the first quarter finished it was clear to see why.

The reigning premiers had been down on their luck for the previous few weeks and took the opportunity to get themselves back into form against a Melbourne side which had time and time again proven that for all their successes against the disappointing sides in the VFL couldn't go with the big hitters.

Six goals to one in the first 25 minutes sealed the result, and with the game lost Peter Keenan was seen lighting a cigarette in the three quarter time huddle. It wasn't until Melbourne kicked five goals in quick succession during the last term that they looked dangerous but Carlton regrouped and held on to win, seriously denting the Demons finals chances. They were still only a game and percentage outside the five, but time was running out.

Best were Hardeman, Alves and Callery. Tilbrook (strained shoulder) was replaced by Davis during the second quarter and Molloy (thigh) by Osborne at three-quarter time.
