Fresh off their miracle victory against Essendon a week earlier, the Demons came down to earth against a North Melbourne side still clinging on to hopes of contending for a spot in the top four.

Despite conceding the first goal the Demons soon took the lead, with Bernie Vince converting two of his 15 first quarter touches into goals, but by the end of the quarter North had asserted their superiority - and even though they only had an 11 point lead already looked the better side and had been wasteful with their goal kicking.

Three goals each in the second saw the Kangaroos extend their margin by three, as Bernie Vince continued to play a lone hand for the Demons on his way to 41 possessions - the outright fourth most on record at the time.

Early in the third quarter a Chris Dawes goal cut the margin to seven, and it looked like for the second week in a row a wasteful opponent would leave the door open for the Demons to get it right and run over the top of them - but then a devastating spell put the game away.

From the seven minute mark of the quarter to the 21st the Roos kicked 6.2 to one point and Melbourne were left too far behind to contend. They restricted North to a single goal in the last quarter and won the term to make things more respectable but it had been a disappointing performance.

Best were Vince, Cross and Dawes. Jordie McKenzie was suspended for one match for striking Lindsay Thomas with an elbow in the second quarter.

Aidan Riley replaced Christian Salem during the third quarter.
