Melbourne's first game, and first win, against the Dockers put them firmly back into the race for the finals after a nightmare opening to the season. A third straight win left them level at 7-7, and in seventh on the league ladder.

Fremantle led by eight points late in the last quarter before a Garry Lyon free kick cut the margin to two, and the Demons quickly took the lead in the second quarter. In the third quarter Neil Balme made an important move, shifting Jim Stynes from the ruck to the half-forward line. He switched Greg Doyle onto the ball, where Stynes had been beaten. Stynes kicked two goals and set up a number of opportunities for teammates.

Best were Stynes, G. Lovett and M. Febey
