David Neitz, forward again, kicked two first quarter goals to give the Demons an early lead but a five goal to one blast within ten minutes set Essendon on their way to victory.
The Bombers led by 44 points at half-time and again the final change before the Demons finally kicked into gear and put together a run which almost helped them over the line for an amazing comeback victory. Russell Robertson and David Neitz kicked four last quarter goals between them, but Neitz missed a shot from 30m out that would have cut the margin to 7 points with two minutes to play. It was the end of the Demon charge.
Best were White, Neitz and Ward. Nathan Brown suffered a bruised shin.
David Schwarz was reported for striking Andrew Welsh. He received a one match suspension and subsequently retired.
