The Blues had snuck into the top four on the back of a streak of lucky victories, but a loss the week before made their position precarious again. Another loss dented their chances of playing finals football but did no harm to Melbourne's chances of finishing second.

Kicking with a strong breeze in the first quarter the Demons opened up a lead but predictably surrendered it into the wind during the second - failing to score at all for the quarter as Carlton scored 5.2, going into the third term three goals behind.

Handed the chance to rack up a match winning lead in the third they were woefully inaccurate in adding 5.9 to 0.2, leaving the Blues well within striking distance with use of the last term gale.

A fighting last quarter saw Melbourne kick just the second goal of the day into the wind and hold on for a crucial victory. Prime Minister Robert Menzies was an interested onlooker but went home disappointed when his Blues failed to get the job done.

Shane McGrath, Geoff Collins and Noel McMahen were the best in the defence, while Bob McKenzie played a storming second half in the middle of the ground. Rodda was replaced in the third quarter when he suffered a leg injury. Jeffers and Lourey were 19th and 20th men.
