Melbourne's second successive victory had given them some chance of qualifying for the finals, if they could get past the Blues and keep winning in the last few weeks of the season.

Carlton too needed to win to keep their hopes of finishing in the top four alive, and when they were 25 points in front with ten minutes left it looked as if Melbourne were finished - but the Demons stormed home to almost steal victory.

It wasn't enough, and the loss finished Melbourne off for season 1945. If league leading goalkicker Fred Fanning had been present and not in South Australia playing for Victoria it might have been a different result, but in his absence Melbourne's season was over.
