The Demons kept their winning streak alive and embedded themselves inside the four, but it wasn't without some drama. Melbourne kicked with the breeze in the first quarter, and they got the first goal but failed to take full advantage and went in two points behind.
Richmond made no such mistake, shooting away to a 26 point lead in the second before Melbourne recovered to limit the damage to nine points at the long break. In the third quarter they provided their opposition with chances with poor defensive play, but two goals in the middle of the quarter temporarily had them in front before Richmond struck back.
From there the two played out a thriller. Melbourne took the lead early in the last quarter and held onto it until the last five minutes before Richmond swept forward for two quick goals which gave them the lead. Jack Mueller was the hero, taking a mark in defence, then dashing forward to mark strongly and kick the goal to put his side back in front. The siren went with Melbourne three points ahead and the ball in the hands of Lou Reiffel, he ran off his mark to kick the goal but it was allowed.
In was Melbourne's first win at the ground since 1926 and gave them a lead of two full games on fifth place.
Glass, Ogden and Lewis were best. Deague was 19th man.
