After winning five of their first six games, an injury crisis gave Melbourne a reality check. When Todd Viney missed with a hamstring injury, the team's entire leadership group were out of action. They fielded two debutantes, ruckman Mark Bradly as a late replacement for Jim Stynes (ankle injury), and Daniel Ward, who came off the rookie list during the week when Brett Lovett retired. The inexperienced visitors were beaten easily, with Adelaide's attacking defenders continually slicing through the middle of the ground and setting up chances for their forwards.
Down the other end, Melbourne's forward line struggled, but they remained within striking distance until three-quarter time before the margin blew out in the last quarter as Adelaide kicked 5.6 to 0.3.
Best were S. Febey, Woewodin and White. Febey was injured after being kneed in the back.
Disappointed coach Daniher said "We gave away a lot of easy goals through clumsy mistakes early in the game. Their good kicking really hurt us. They probably set up their goals a lot better than we did."
