The second half of the season started with Melbourne two games inside the top four. On a sodden ground they made a statement against one of the teams chasing them with a hard fought victory over their next door neighbours.

Coming off the bye against a side who had a good record on their home ground Melbourne didn't start as warm favourites as their position on the ladder would have justified. After Melbourne kicked the first goal of the game the rest of the first quarter went with the advantage of the home side, who had the breeze. A blistering six goal to nil second term - including three from Harry Brereton set up a 30 point lead for the Reds at the break.

Richmond struck back in the third to hit the front, before Melbourne goalled at the end of the term to level the scores. Early in the last term the Reds could only kick points. Richmond took the lead but never scored again, and after Melbourne's defenders turned back a lengthy siege, two more goals got the visitors over the line.

Best were Bacquie, Brereton and Park. Victory gave Melbourne a two game break inside the top four.
