A string of undisciplined acts by the Lions gifted Melbourne a handy lead at quarter time. They kicked the first six goals of the quarter before conceding the last to take the advantage, but throughout the day Melbourne were never able to shake their opposition.
Melbourne led by 13 points at the 23 minute mark of the last quarter, before Richard Osborne's 8th goal of the day gave Fitzroy the lead for the first time all day shortly after. Stephen Tingay received a handball from Stephen Newport in the goalsquare and kicked a high, spiralling snap with his first kick in league football to put the Demons back in front.
Garry Lyon injured his knee and Bret Bailey suffered bruised ribs.
