First recruited to the club in 1975 O'Keefe was diagnosed with cancer in 1976 but managed to play on despite undergoing an operation and was voted Best First Year Player. Early in 1977 he was stricken again and forced to undergo two more operations. During his absence from the game he worked as a PE teacher at Elwood High School.
O'Keefe returned to the Demons in 1978 and played in the reserves, with one more senior game in 1979. Before the 1980 season he returned to Seymour as an Assistant Coach.
O'Keefe's brother Francis joined the club at the same time but did not play seniors.
Wore number 51 in 1975 Reserves games.
