Despite kicking five goals on debut with Box Hill in the VFL, Bishop played just five more games for the club due to a bad case of flu. He later trained with St Kilda, and was spotted by Melbourne scouts while playing in an intra-club game for the Saints.

By now a defender, Bishop was elevated from the rookie list during 1998 when David Cockatoo-Collins was delisted. Bishop gave two years of service before being traded to Port Adelaide for pick #42 in the 1999 Draft.

He became one of the Power's most reliable defenders and played in their 2004 Premiership side before being delisted at the end of the 2006 season.

In 2011 Bishop was Port Adelaide's Football Services Manager.
