Recruited at the end of 2007 after finishing seconds in the Rebels' best and fairest, Cheney spent 2008 in the reserves before making his debut in Round 1, 2009. Despite impressing on debut he was dropped after his third game but returned to play 12 matches for the season as a running defender.
Unable to achieve a permanent position in the senior side in 2010 Cheney played just two games in the middle of the year, spending most the season with the Casey Demons where he finished runner-up in their Best and Fairest award.
During the trade week at the end of the 2010 season, he was traded to Hawthorn along with pick 66 for Hawthorn's selection 52. After compensation and priority picks it became selection 53 for the Demons and they drafted Tom McDonald.
Cheney made his debut for the Hawks in Round 11 of 2011 and played eight games for the season before losing his spot at the start of the finals. He added another six games to his career tally in 2012, and four more in 2013 and won the Box Hill Best and Fairest in 2013.
He was then traded to Adelaide for the 2015 season and debuted with them in Round 1 that year, eventually playing in his first final. After playing 24 games in 2016 he missed all of 2017, before returning for eight games in 2018, which was his final season in the AFL.
