Melbourne win by 1 goal

Goalkickers: Charles Carr 1

Several players in the selected squads of both sides were unable to appear. The match was played 17-a-side with Carlton fielding substitutes from the crowd to get up to that number. The Blues were favoured by the wind for the first part of the game, and Melbourne afterward. Both teams traded behinds before Carr kicked the only goal of the match 30 minutes in.

When the teams changed ends Melbourne used the wind to put the Carlton goal under siege, but they were unable to penetrate the defence again. When the match was called off shortly before 5 o'clock no other goals had been added.

Carr was best.
