Debuting as an 18-year-old in the first round of 1989, Ahern played the first two games of the season but by Round 8 he was back in the Under 19s and never played another VFL match. After injury stopped him from any further senior games in 1990, he joined North Melbourne in 1991 but didn't add to his tally.

In 1992 Ahern spent a season at Port Adelaide before coaching at Hamilton and Mortlake. He also coached Albert Park amateur football club in 2003 and served as an assistant to Andy Lovell at Sandringham before moving full time into the business of owning pubs.

Also wore number 57 in 1988 Reserves games.
