A pacy wingman who played six and a half post-war seasons for Essendon, including as vice captain in 1923. He missed out on their Grand Final victory that year, but won a premiership in 1924 when the title was decided in a round robin format.

Sullivan joined Melbourne midway through 1925, after a complication when he required a clearance due to living in the residential area of VFL newcomers North Melbourne. He played six matches to end his senior career then served as captain/coach of the Melbourne Seconds from 1926 to 1928.
