Despite having been leading goalkicker at Sandringham in 1948 (73 goals) and 1949 (53 goals), Hiscock was recruited by Melbourne as a half-forward rather than a full-forward because he lacked the size to be a league spearhead. He had first appeared at Melbourne training in the 1949 pre-season, but failed to impress and was unable to win a clearance from Sandringham. The VFA club promised Hiscock would be allowed to train with the Demons in the 1950 pre-season. This time he was cleared, and debuted early in the year but only played a handful of games before returning to Sandringham, where he played a total of 107 games for 196 goals.

Hiscock joined Trentham in 1954, captain/coached them to the Riddell League premiership in 1956, and was reappointed for 1957. He also played district cricket for Caulfield.
