Despite having been leading goalkicker at Sandringham in 1948 (73 goals) and 1949 (53 goals), Hiscock was recruited by Melbourne as a half-forward rather than a full-forward because he lacked the build to be a lead spearhead. He had first appeared at Melbourne training in the 1949 pre-season, but failed to impress and returned to his old side when they refused to clear him to the VFL.
Sandringham promised he would be allowed to train with the Demons in 1950, and he won his first start early in the new season. He played just a handful of games at Melbourne before returning to the Zebras - when he played a total of 107 games and kicked 196 goals.
He also played district cricket for Caulfield.
