Michael John Doherty debuted for South Adelaide in 1939 and the midfielder was best and fairest for a combined wartime South/Sturt team in 1942. In February that year he enlisted in the Army, and when he was transferred to Victoria in 1943, Doherty was cleared to Melbourne. He played nine games over two years before returning to South Adelaide for a final season in 1945.
Doherty served with the 1N Ordnance division during World War II.
