Nicknamed 'Moose', Hunnibell was a ruckman who joined the Demons at 23 years old. He made his senior debut in Tasmania in 1974, playing in a Northern Tasmanian League premiership and playing his first game for Tasmania in 1977.

Hunnibell couldn't find a permanent spot in Melbourne's side, but was chosen to play for his state in the 1979 national carnival. In 1980 only played two senior games, but won the Reserves Best and Fairest, before returning to North Launceston in 1981. There he won another Best and Fairest and premiership.

Over three years he played a handful of games and returned to North Launceston in 1981 where he won a Best and Fairest award and played in his second premiership side. In 1982 he joined New Norfolk and won another premiership/best-and-fairest double, adding two more B&F's to his tally while serving as their captain/coach in 1984 and 1985.

In 1986 Hunnibell moved to Clarence but resigned as coach after that season and played until the end of 1991. He represented Tasmania 17 times and was inducted to the Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame in 2006.
