Fenley John "Fen" McDonald was the third member of his family to play VFL football after his brothers Arch and Edwin had both played a game for Essendon. Fen moved to Melbourne in 1910 to study at business college and was recruited from the local district side to Carlton in 1911.
He played a single game in his first year, a 19 goal victory, before nine in the back line during his second. In early 1913 he was cleared to Melbourne, but managed just one game for the club and left at the end of that year. He rejoined the Carlton Districts team in 1914 before enlisting in the army at the outbreak of the First World War. McDonald was killed in the first day of landings at Gallipoli. His body was never recovered.

Notes
Service records show his name signed as Stanley, probably a misprint of Fenley.
