Originally a Collingwood player in the VFA, Lanigan remained for them in their first VFL season before transferring to Melbourne where he played as a defender.
He joined Carlton the next year, making him the first player to appear for three different sides in the VFL.
Lanigan was also a bowler for the MCC cricket side.
