Drafted as a ruck prospect, Clarke had played the last 1992 Reserves game for the Brisbane Bears. At 203cm, he spent more time as a forward at Melbourne but never graduated to the senior side.

In 1993 he was selected in the Queensland state squad but did not play.

After being delisted by Melbourne at the end of 1995, Clarke joined Frankston in the VFL and played more than 200 games for the Dolphins, eventually becoming their games/goals record holder and being named a life member of both the club and the VFL.

He played in Grand Final sides in his first two years in the competition and finished third place in the Liston Trophy in his first year.

In 2008 he played for the Seaford Tigers and later served as an assistant coach to Brett Lovett at Casey Demons.
