The multi-talented sportsman debuted in Tasmania aged 17-years-old in 1949, and kicked a record 22.15 in a game against East Devonport in 1952. He also played six first first-class cricket matches for Tasmania in their pre-Sheffield Shield era between 1952 and 1964.
After kicking 10 goals in the last three weeks of 1953 he played in Round 1, 1954 and was then dropped. Anderson moved to Williamstown in June 1954. Northcote had attempted to sign him in May of that year but Melbourne refused them permission.
