Dunsford graduated from the Thirds, where he'd played in 1954 and 1955 before making his senior debut early in 1957. He was in and out of the side through the middle of the year, avoiding a loss and becoming the Demon player with the most total career games never to have tasted defeat.

He had a delayed start to 1958 due to his athletics career and didn't play a senior match. Dunsford then crossed to North Melbourne in 1959 but didn't play a game.

His running career continued into the late 1960's, and Dunsford started as 6/4 favourite for the 1967 Stawell Gift, but did not win.
