A former VFA ruckman who appeared for the club in 1895 and 1896, McCulloch missed the start of the 1898 season while living in Broken Hill. He returned to play three more games that year, and one in 1899.

He was cleared to Collingwood in April 1901 and played two seasons there.

Notes
In June 1897 it's suggested that McCulloch played under an assumed name at some point. He might have been the "Williams" who played in Melbourne's Round 1 1897 and Round 2 1897 sides.

In 1900 he was said to have missed a year and returned when official records show he played in 1899.
