Recruited by the Demons after winning two Best and Fairest awards with Morningside in 1972 and 1976, the defender had also finished second in the 1973 Grogan Medal for best player in the Queensland competition. Denny played three seasons in Victoria before moving back to his old side in the QAFL and adding a further 113 games to his tally.

In his second match Denny came off the bench to play one quarter but suffered a ruptured tendon in his finger and a broken collarbone. He didn't play seniors again until Round 20.

He played seven games for Queensland both before and after his time at Melbourne and coached Morningside during the mid-1980s. Denny is a member of the Queensland AFL Hall of Fame.
