The Railways played with a an advantage of 25 to 20, but by the times the sides mustered at the ground it was 22-18. Melbourne won the toss and immediately went on the attack, forcing the railwaymen to defend strongly. They got their two goals in the first half, and despite having a number of good chances in the second couldn't add to the score.
