The ruckman signed for Melbourne after competition from VFA side Sandringham, but never found a regular place in the side. He battled an ankle injury in 1953 before leaving the club after playing three games in three seasons. He went to Prahran for the rest of that season.

After returning to Black Rock in 1954 after the pre-season he attempted to rejoin Melbourne's list in 1955. He failed to make it and instead finally joined Sandringham in 1955 and played 35 games over two years.

Krause was the last Demon to wear 13 until 1975 after Jim Cardwell banned it for being unlucky.
