The Demons gave fans more hope of an improved season when they made the Semi Final of the pre-season tournament, by beating one of the 1997 preliminary finalists.
Melbourne heavily tagged the Bulldogs players who'd done the most damage in their first round victory, and it helped kept them quiet enough to open a one goal lead. They were two in front late in the third quarter before a last minute goal cut the margin back to 10 points. The Demons finally kicked away with three goals to nil in the last quarter.
Best were Glenn Lovett, Paul Hopgood and Jeff Farmer. Lovett also suffered a hamstring injury. David Schwarz was reported for striking and suspended for one match.
