Despite missing three of their key recruits and captain Roger Merrett, the Bears overcame a wayward first quarter to lead at every other change and register an easy victory. Melbourne were also missing key players, including the top three in the previous year's best and fairest Todd Viney, Stephen Tingay and Glenn Lovett and struggled in the 30 degree heat.
Jim Stynes provided a memorable footnote to the game by wearing a cap to reduce sun glare. The hat survived until the second quarter when Bear Matthew Kennedy grabbed it from Stynes' head and tore it to pieces. The peak had already been torn away in the first quarter.
