With their streak of four Seconds premierships at risk in an elimination game, the curtain raiser for that afternoon's senior Semi Final saw Melbourne fight to the last few minutes to keep their season alive. On their own ground, Melbourne started with a 13 point quarter lead after kicking four goals straight, while the Blues only managed 1.5. They also kicked the first two goals of the second quarter, before Carlton stabilised to be just 14 points behind. Rain fell at the start of the third quarter, impeding Melbourne's marking game, but Carlton's forward play failed to take advantage. It took until the last quarter when they rallied to a two point lead deep in the final term. Shortly before the bell, Keith Truscott kicked the winning goal.

Best were Feltscheer, Truscott and Kinnear.
