The champion schoolboy athlete had his debut delayed until midway through 1912 due to a pre-season accident. He then broke a finger playing for for his school during an interstate game weekend but only missed a week and played out the rest of the year. He had been pursued by Collingwood, Essendon, and Richmond but teammate Mick Maguire convinced Wellington to join Melbourne.
The quick wingman played five games in his first season, then had a delayed start to 1913 due to military duty. Wellington played in Round 4, then not again until Round 11.
