Ogden joined Essendon after two best and fairest awards with Northcote CYMS since his debut in 1928 but never made it past their Seconds and was cleared to Melbourne in early 1931. The son of Essendon's Percy and Melbourne's Gordon didn't make his debut until the next season then played three games a wingman.

He remained with the club in 1933 but couldn't make it out of the seconds - where he won a premiership - before joining Carlton in 1934. Ogden played 15 games with them but passed away a year later after suffering pleurisy in both lungs. The Blues' club secretary gave blood for him to have a transfusion but he died the next week.

Carlton's Most Improved Player award was named after Ogden from 1935 to 1950, as well as the third place Best and Fairest award between 1951 and 1954. The Best First Year Player award was named after him between 1955 and 1958.
