Melbourne faded badly, missing a golden opportunity to defeat the reigning premiers who were coming off a belting by Carlton the week before. Hawthorn took a depleted side in against the 7-1 Demons and had both Jason Dunstall and John Platten playing under injury clouds.
It got worse for Hawthorn as they lost both Dermott Brereton and Dunstall to serious injuries during the first quarter. Dunstall received a hairline fracture of the skull after colliding with Earl Spalding. On a dewy surface, Spalding slid into the Hawthorn full-forward at the instant Dunstall completed a diving chest mark. Brereton hurt his groin, but despite playing against a side with no players left on the bench Melbourne were unable to put a winning score in the board after half time.
Despite controlling the game in the first quarter Melbourne only managed one goal in the second half, and a solitary point in the last quarter allowed the Hawks to run over the top and win. A 60 metre torpedo by Gary Ayres with the wet ball 15 minutes into the final term sealed the victory. Ayres had been moved to full-forward out of necessity after his side's early injuries - he ended up kicking three goals, while Platten put suggestions of injury aside by kicking four.
Best were Newport, G. Lovett and Campbell. Garry Lyon was reprimanded for abusive language, after disputing a decision during the third quarter after the umpire paid a 50m penalty against him. The umpire offered him a chance to retract his comments before reporting him.
Despite the loss Melbourne remained top of the ladder on percentage from the Eagles.
