Melbourne remained on top of the ladder despite their loss the previous week to North Melbourne, but were shocked by the Bulldogs as they dropped their second game in a row.
The Demons had opened up a 22 point lead at half time, and were still 23 points up in the third quarter before the Bulldogs kicked six goals - including four to Illija Grgic - to snatch a three point lead at the last change.
After a tense struggle throughout the final term where the Bulldogs had got 14 points in front then were forced to withstand a comeback, Jason Norrish had a shot to put the Demons in front in the final minutes from 35 metres out. He hit the inside of the post and the Dogs held on to win.
Neale Balme said his team were: "Off the boil", adding "We just played really poorly, we made mistake after mistake."
