After two wins in a row against the best sides in the competition, Melbourne had a much easier task against North. It wasn't a given win though, the Demons had already lost to Footscray and Hawthorn during the season so anything could happen against the other one of the most recent ex-VFA clubs.
What did happen was another quick start by the Demons. On a damp MCG they kicked five goals to one in the first quarter, and five goals to three in the second. With the score at 1.1, Melbourne then rattled on ten straight goals into the third quarter before they kicked another point.
With the match all but won at half time Melbourne slackened off, often passing instead of taking shots on goal, and North battled on to come out of the game with a respectable five goal margin. After their dominant ten goal in a row run Melbourne then went on to kick 2.9 in the last quarter.
Smith, Beames and Fischer were best.
