Melbourne's improved 1921 campaign continued with another victor over one of the league's heavyweights.
The victory was inspired by a pre-match speech from Henry Harrison who told then to continue the great form they'd shown against Richmond a week earlier.
The Reds were strong performers but they were assisted by a poor goalkicking effort by the visitors who racked up 4.17, and just 1.7 in the second half.
Coy held the dangerous Merrick, who kicked nine in his last start against Melbourne, to one goal. House, Wilson and Haines were Melbourne's best other players.
