After an 11 goal haul the previous week Geelong's danger man Lloyd Hagger was kept to three goals, but Melbourne let too many of his teammates kick goals - as well as hurting their own chances with wayward kicking on goal.

On a bitterly cold day the MCG had stood up well through heavy rain on Friday and Saturday morning, but a strong wind played havoc with kicking and caused many out of bounds frees to be paid throughout the day.

The wind gave Melbourne their chance in the first quarter, but with it at their back their kicking for goal was atrocious and the lead was only nine points. Geelong weren't much better at scoring, but they locked the game up at half time before the home side got another chance with the breeze.

It didn't help that Stan Wittman succumbed to injury, but Melbourne again failed to take advantage of the breeze and allowed Geelong to kick three goals. The visitors were the only side to use the wind's potential in the fourth quarter and it helped them win - five goals to none the deciding factor in a poor match.

Harry Davie was Melbourne's chief offender up forward, marking strongly at full forward but missing too many shots. White, Davidson and Corby were best on ground. Wittman, Moyes and Warne-Smith were injured.

The loss left Melbourne fifth on percentage behind North Melbourne, and level with Carlton and St Kilda below them.
