Two straight losses has dented Melbourne's chances of making the four after a bright start to the season, but they got back into the winner's circle on King's Birthday Monday despite a blistering comeback from the Cats.
Each side did better against the wind throughout the day than with it, and both defences did well holding their opposition to nine goals for the day. The Reds started with three goals in the first quarter, and attacked first in the second but split the quarter 2.3 apiece - both goals coming late in the quarter.
The standard of the game fell away in the third quarter, with Melbourne realising that a fast open game didn't suit them and instead crowding the play. They got their sixth goal 25 seconds into the quarter and two more easy chances to add a seventh. Each side got one more for the quarter and the game looked well won at with Melbourne four goals to the good.
Geelong had managed just four majors all day, but they launched a blockbusting comeback which fell just a goal short. Countering the Reds' crowding tactics they took the lead in the last quarter, and with three minutes left were a point to the good. It was only bad umpiring which cost them. The umpire missed a decision on the wing and the Geelong played had been so certain he was about to receive a free kick he stopped playing, the ball went forward and Melbourne scored.
Harker was Melbourne's best, along with Tulloh and Alf Wilson.
Herb Matthews was reported for elbowing and suspended for one match.
