Having righted their season with a hard fought, but comfortable, victory the previous Saturday the Demons went to North Melbourne looking to further consolidate their position against of the league's traditional easybeats.
Unlike their match against St Kilda a week earlier it was the Demons who got off to the better start, taking a three goal lead into the first change before North burst out of the blocks with seven goals to three in the second term to cut the margin to eight points at the long break. Melbourne tried to stem the bleeding with a positional switch, moving Ron Kimberley from full-back to half-back, and sending Wally Lock to the last line of defence. They adopted the same move in the last quarter, but by then the wind had died down.
The half time margin was as close as North got, with seven goals to three in the second half accounting for their challenge.
Baggott, Emselle and Barassi were best. Rowley Fischer was suspended for two matches for attempting striking. Truscott was 19th man.
