The Demons kept their flawless premiership defence alive, plunging Essendon to their first 0-3 start since 1967. Melbourne had the best of the opening term against the wasteful Bombers, but were unable to land a knockout blow, and had to fight off challenges until midway through the last quarter, when Ed Langdon kicked a Goal of the Year contending banana kick from the boundary line to make sure of victory.
Best were Oliver, Brayshaw and Bowey. Toby Bedford was an unused substitute.
