For three quarters the young Demons played fast, exciting football and looked set to extend their record to 2-1 for year but the Blues experience and coolness under pressure won out as they ran over Melbourne in the last quarter to win.
The biggest lead had been 26 points midway through the second quarter, but whenever they threatened to pull away Carlton pegged them back. One of the main reasons for the Demons' success was centre half-back Stephen Kerley who had 29 kicks and took 15 marks for the day. It took until the start of the last quarter for Robert Walls to shake him, but when he did it helped shift momentum towards the Blues.
Best were Kerley, Wells and Clennett. Giampaolo and Keenan (corked thighs) were replaced by Ritterman and Leary respectively during the last quarter.
